“I woke up as the sun was reddening; and that was the one distinct time in my life, the strangest moment of all, when I didn’t know who I was - I was far away from home, haunted and tired with travel, in a cheap hotel room I’d never seen, hearing the hiss of steam outside, and the creak of the old wood of the hotel, and footsteps upstairs, and all the sad sounds, and I looked at the cracked high ceiling and really didn’t know who I was for about fifteen strange seconds. I wasn’t scared; I was just somebody else, some stranger, and my whole life was a haunted life, the life of a ghost.”—Jack Kerouac On the Road
I don’t know, they don’t have any dates scheduled there right now! But it is a frequent stop for them so you can safely anticipate a show there or nearby when they start touring in support of the new album.
Why has negativity become the go-to attitude for rebellion? There's nothing unique or revolutionary about hating life and putting yourself down. Negativity is tired. Negativity is boring. Negativity is easy and lazy and pathetic. You want revenge for every shitty thing that's happened to you? Try being positive for a change. Treat every obstacle like a challenge to be won. Show every hater that, despite their efforts, they have failed to keep you down. Never allow yourself to become the end product of everything you hate... because that is what's expected of you. Prove them all wrong.
Hey Jess I was on The Amory Wars site the other day and I didn't see any other volumes for IKSSE3 except the first, do they not have a volume 2 or 3 put together yet or is it just not on the site? Thanks :)
Alright I'm back. Who is your favorite "jam" band? Whats your greatest fear (not like failure or death, but like bugs or clowns or heights)? Favorite film director and why? Whats your favorite city you've visited (and why) and which city has the highest concentration of children of the fence? Whats your stance on vinyl? What about giant crab monsters like in Star Wars episode 2? Grape or strawberry jelly? Lastly, if you you think you know who I am, send me an anon question
If you are talking about a band actually classified as a “jam” band, then I’m going with Jethro Tull. But if you are talking about bands I “jam out” or “groove” to, I am choosing any modern incarnation of Robert Plant, such as Band of Joy or his work with Alison Krauss.
My favorite film director is Quentin Tarantino because you could take a still of any one of his films at any time and it would be as beautifully composed as a photograph. See especially: Inglourious Basterds
My favorite city to visit is NYC because I love huge cities in all their nasty glory and mesh well with the East Coast “mind your biz” mentality. Naturally NYC has a huge concentration of Coheed fans but so do Detroit, Cleveland, Philly, and Boston.
Vinyl is cool both in music and toy form!
I prefer preserves to jelly but strawberry is tasty. And I have only the vaguest notion who you are!
Really jealous of all you in the US who get to see Coheed in ten days or so! 'Cause I'm from the UK I've only been able to see Coheed once, when they supported Deftones. Twas still life-affirmingly brilliant. Anyway, just wanted to say how awesome your blog is!
They are coming back to you in August for Reading & Leeds, so don’t lose hope for a tour structured around it! No guarantees, obviously.
If you were a mutant and could choose your mutant power, what would you choose? Why would you choose it?
Telekinesis, without a question. I would choose it because I have had dreams about it since I was very young. It also fits along with my inherent faith that one can hypothetically move mountains with the power of the mind - only fitting that I’d want to do so literally.
I work two 12 hour shifts a week (Monday and Thursday we're open 9-9), I work an average of 50 hours a week. So I know you're pain. Anyway you need distractions huh? Dogs or cats? Owls or hawks? Baseball or football or other? Tape or staples? Whats the furthest you've ever been away from home? What motivates you day to day (gym, depression, etc.)? I'll think of more and get back to you later.
I have three cats whose company I enjoy very much. I like dogs, I’ve just never had one. In my future I’d like to raise a husky pup.
Both hawks and owls are awesome, since I am a raptor enthusiast and have participated in DNR owl and falcon releases. If I had to choose though, I’d go with the falcons.
I don’t ever watch sports. Or play them, although I’m not averse to occasionally boxing. I can get sorta into American football, because the aggression is cool and the unintended homoeroticism is hilarious.
I like staples and also thumbtacks.
I’ve done a lot of traveling in the country but not outside of it. The furthest I have gone is north Vermont for a Coheed show.
I’m motivated every day because my life used to suck worse than anyone can imagine and now it’s pretty great and it won’t stay that way unless I work my ass off.
You travel a lot. What's the most breathtaking sight you've ever seen?
Oh, this is a good distraction! :) I think the most gorgeous thing I ever saw was witnessing the exact moment the sun broke the horizon over the Atlantic Ocean as my plane was banking out to land. So beautiful.
Jess, I'm 21 (22 in two weeks), 10lbs overweight, and ridiculously out of shape. I've started to attempt healthier eating, and feel I have succeeded in this thus far. However, I'm finding a lack of motivation to work out and get in shape. I know that if I figured out something, I'd be able to keep it, so long as it was part of a regular schedule. How exactly do I go about this? Also, I've been thinking that a cleanse might be in order. Any recommendations that are affordable for this? Thank you!
Find something that you like to do. That’s the most important. Do you like to feel bad-ass? Pick something with a martial arts base, like kickboxing or Tae Bo, or start lifting heavy weights. Do you like more peaceful, low-impact activities? Swimming and yoga. Are you a survivalist type? Running, hiking, and obstacle courses. So many options. If you want to join a gym, there are many $10/month basic “self serve” gyms (my gym is Planet Fitness).
I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to perform a cleanse, since regularly drinking white or green tea and eating more fiber will do the exact same thing as any supplement you can buy.
Also, please make sure you are eating enough. When people start health kicks, guys especially never seem to eat enough. Knowing your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and eating at least that much is a good way to make sure you don’t hinder your own progress.
Oh Jess, you look simply amazing! Congrats!! I love that you are doing this to become healthy first and foremost. I want to thank you, as corny as this may sound, because you've helped me remember that you can do anything you set your mind too and that you shouldn't just give up on something that is important. I've started my journey in February and have since lost 10 lbs, its a slow process and a great learning experience with finding who I truly am. Thank you for the inspiration <3
10 lbs since February is a great achievement, congratulations! I’m really happy to hear that you are taking the time that you need. It is indeed a slow process, and that is good, because if it was too quick there would be so much valuable info we would never absorb, and we could never learn all the important things about ourselves. Good for you. Stay positive always! <3
Hi Jess :). I'm going to see Coheed this August for the first time ever! They are playing with Iron Maiden at the Verizon Wireless Ampitheater in Irvine, CA. This may be difficult, but is there any way I can meet the band after the show? Thanks so much.
The best way to meet them is to hang around after the show, or keep your ears open for news of meet-and-greets in your area. Plus I’m not really the one who sets this stuff up… Good luck :)
